“Then You Win” The Linux Revolution
Saturday, April 29th, 2006
In the midst of sky rocketing gas prices, the war in Iraq continuing without any real opposition and congress still believing a wall will keep people from immigrating to this country I see a glimpse of hope in our future. There are many revolutions that in fact are not being televised but are sure as hell being fought. I will focus on one today and that is the operating system revolution. If you haven’t heard of Linux I will try to briefly explain it.
Basically it is an operating system like Windows or Mac OS, but free. Anyone can download it and install it on a PC or Mac. Better yet if you are that code savvy you can even download the source code, edit it and release it to others. I have used it and I really enjoyed it. There is so much software that you can use on it ranging from photo editing to word processing. The best part is that it’s all free. My favorite distribution has been ELive because of its polished look. A friend also recently recommended Ubuntu to me I guess it’s also really good and user friendly. Each one has a live cd which means it will boot from the cd and you can try it out with out installing it on your computer. All you have to do is burn the ISO to a cd.
