Imperialism, what an antiquated word. When President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela began to use the word in describing the United States I thought imperialism was just something that we read in history books and no longer existed today. So I largely discredited much of what he would say. Although, now I realize that imperialism is much alive in our modern society. It is being disguised as the free market. In fact, Lenin defined imperialism as the highest stage of capitalism. When I see multinational corporations patenting the seeds to foods that are native to the local lands or trying to own things like fucking rain water I no longer believe imperialism has at all disappeared. It reminds me of the first temptation of Jesus. You can’t sell me something I already own! You see to me imperialism, fascism or plutocracy is all the same. When working class people who are the backbone of society do not have a “real” say either because of ignorance or oppression don’t give it some bullshit title just say it how it is: a lack of democracy exist.
In the 2008 presidential election all the candidates will have taken much of their campaign money from huge corporations, the same corporations will also give to candidates of the opposing party. Now who the hell do you think once they get in office their loyalty will belong to? Maybe the grandma in small town Kansas who contributed $100 dollars in her belief that she was going to help elect someone who will bring real change. I don’t think so.
“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of the government by an individual, by a group or any controlling private power.”
-Franklin Delano Roosevelt
“The nihilistic market-dominated mentality–the quest for wealth and power–leads to the drive for conquest, and it’s when market morality prevails over democratic principle that imperialism reigns supreme.”
-Cornel West
On the link to the video of police beating reporters and stuff, on my last blog post, someone posted a comment I just had to respond to. The website only posted part of my response. So I am posting his comment and then my response.

Rocks thrown…. frozen bottles of urine brought for the specific purpose of attacking the police with? Sounds real peaceful to me all right…. The right to assemble peacefully was granted in a specific area, the MOB defied the law, moved out of the area legally designated for their peaceful protest. The LAPD acted in response to their illegal actions, but wait! They don’t care about our American laws do they? Not one bit, and that is why they deserve what they get whenever and wherever they defy the law. Our Constitution may protect their rights, but that does not mean they have a right to be here, which is much more then an American would get in Mexico, where their law say we Americans and benefactors to this horde of illegal aliens, have no rights whatsoever.

Fred,
Number one, it doesn’t matter how Mexico runs their immigration policy. We are discussing U.S. immigration policy. Therefore, please don’t copy Rush Limbaugh and use other nation’s shortcomings as a cop out. Lord knows we have plenty of them. We usually dismiss when other nations criticize our policies. Anyway the United States is on a whole different level, I would think mainly because of its immigration tradition. You see Fred, maybe you have forgotten your own conservative rhetoric. We are a beacon for the world. I mean no wonder people are trying to leave Mexico and other Latin American countries to come here. They see that beacon shinning from afar. I myself am an immigrant and this country has done many good things for immigrants. This land was made for immigrants. The first settlers immigrated here from Asia via the land bridge; which now is the Bearing Strait separating Russia from Alaska. Since the beginning the indigenous population was very friendly and welcoming towards the Europeans. I mean they let them land right? An unauthorized ship that size couldn’t get near our costs, let alone land on our beaches. So if we want to be a beacon of democracy across the world than we must not compare ourselves against nations like Mexico. Maybe we should be aiming higher, what do you think? Just because one country has an oppressive and unwelcoming immigration policy doesn’t mean we in a “democratic” state should have one as well.
Two, it seems clear that there were objects thrown at cops, but in a protest that size you expect some individuals to get out of control. That is simply how life works. Sad, but true and we should keep working on it. Yet I’m sure reporters and their staff weren’t throwing things at police and still they got beating and shot at. The honest truth is that the LAPD overreacts and abuses citizens; history tells us this. Maybe your memory is a little foggy. It happens.
Three, you should also read up on what U.S. corporations are doing abroad that are making people want to desperately leave their homes and find refuge in the rich and powerful United States. No one wants to leave their home where they are respected by their community to live in the shadows in a foreign land hundreds even thousands of miles away. Your own home grown corporation who is supposed to be your friendly neighborhood store is the real one fucking you over. It’s not the peasant migrant worker from Latin America. I mean honestly they are probably facing what many will one day face in America. You are already seeing the effects of globalization here. It’s not the immigrant who is taking your job. Everyday a new company outsources a service abroad, thus truly depriving job opportunities to Americans. Fred, would you honestly go out and work in 100 degree weather and mow lawns all day, every summer and even year round in some parts of the country. Or maybe you would like to be in a humid climate kneeling under pine trees pulling out small weeds for hours straight. Oh and you would more than likely still be at or near poverty level. So open your mind brother. Even if it was true that many illegals don’t pay income taxes they sure as hell pay a sales tax every time they purchase something. I say anyone who pays taxes and lives in the country should have their voices heard.
YOU need the police to protect and serve YOU, because if the police wasn’t around YOU would be hurting each other! What happens when the police hurts YOU? Who polices them? Themselves? Ha, that’s a funny one, especially for the LAPD.
On Tuesday, after a peaceful protest for immigrant rights the police got involved and what do you know it ended violently. The LAPD broke up the demonstration by beating protesters and reporters with batons and even shot into the family filled crowd with non-lethal rubber bullets. Get the people that were fucking up, not the families and reporters. I don’t want to be quick to judge, but if you watched the videos of innocent people and reporters getting their rights violated it would really get you going. LAPD hasn’t changed very much I guess.
Bratton calls officers’ actions ‘inappropriate’ - Los Angeles Times
In this video, Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi has a quote that has then Governor of Texas George W. Bush criticizing President Clinton about not having a time line; probably referring to the conflict in Kosovo. Yet, now he refuses to apply the same standard to his conflict. Which ends up being based over false information.
